Golazo! Magazine
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign
Project Brief
Create a fictional magazine, taking it from initial concept to both print and digital production. You will focus on key elements of visual communication while demonstrating your knowledge of typographic principles and visual composition.
Brand Goal
Our goal, pun intended, is to bring you the latest football news and information on upcoming competitions. We also highlight past stories and provide our insights on them. Each issue will feature our selection of the best goal of the month at the back of the magazine. We ask you to join us in celebrating the beautiful game with interviews, expert commentary, and fan stories that capture football culture.
Research
My research included looking at sports magazines and observing their use of grids, typography, and hierarchy. I looked at many different stories to use for my articles and chose three departments with one feature editorial. I looked at a lot of fonts to use for logos, headers, and body text to see what best fit my magazine aesthetic. The rest of the research was on the content of the magazine, fashion in football, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi’s career, and icons of football.
Process
I tried different fonts for the logotype that best fit my magazine before deciding on the final one. My design process involved experimenting with different grid types and editing each photo individually on Adobe Photoshop. I went through each section of the magazine in order through my designing process, editing each spread and image as I went. Certain elements, like full image spreads, were changed due to post-printing mismatches.
Reflection
Through this project, I learned the process of creating a magazine from scratch and took the necessary steps to step out of the norm for sports magazines with a fun design approach. My magazine was well-received by peers for its fun design style, which included image edits.
Credits
This project focuses on editorial layout and typographic systems. Written content was sourced from credited authors, with select articles written by me.
